Shmaltz

Note to self: acquire more music on Will's advice. Really, acquire actual copy of stuff by the Red Army Chorus.

Note to my readers: No, it has nothing to do with my politics, apparently I just like shmaltz and folk music done Really Really BIG. This probably shouldn't surprise anyone. But honestly, why are we stuck with an old, unsingable English drinking song, and the former USSR had a wonderfully overdone shmaltzy thing ideal for singing in big groups and feeling patriotically ridiculous? Maybe good national anthems aren't actually good for national continuity? Really, that's all I can think of.

I think that we need to have an old, extremely singable drinking song. Drinking songs are great for singing in groups, assuming you get the right ones. The first German I ever learned was a drinking song, and I wouldn't mind having that be the tune of our national anthem. It's a boisterous song, pretty deep... and if everyone is singing off-key, it probably wouldn't matter. That's all any anthem should be.
