I had an interesting dream just before I woke up. I'll spare the details, but what I found amusing what that primarily, all the characters were people of secondary importance to me, if that. I was going ot visit someone whom I usually wouldn't spare the time, or pay the money to visit just for herself, and whom did I meet at the train station, but two people whom I find amusing, but certainly not real friends. The older I get, the more likely I am to have dreams with fewer significant people in them. It's an interesting development.

It was nice to be back at dancing last night. The guy who goes with Samara and I is now dating someone in B'yachad, who was being resentful that he was dancing with Samara (surprise, surprise- she's pretty much his regular partner). Funny how those things can get confusing. It's one of those things that's harder to manage than one would think. Some people assume that if you're dating, you'll be dancing together all the time. Other people think it means nothing. Generally, people assume whichever way would be more beneficial to them: so the person who doesn't always get a partner presumes that dating a dancer means that they'll always dance together, and the person whose significant other doesn't have much repetoire or doesn't lead/follow well, or has lots of people that he/she regularly dances with presumes that they'll dance together regularly, but far from every set. It's something I've also seen a lot as a problem at the swing dances around here. No one knows how long it's polite to dance with one person. So a lot of dating couples or good friends dance with each other and no one else all night. And other people swap partners every few songs, or after one dance- but they never know who else will be switching, so people don't really change partners efficiently, and a lot of people end up sitting around, looking for a partner. Whereas when I swing dance in COnnecticut (not that often, due to the schedule of when I'm home), there's a clear ethic that the default is to dance one dance, and then switch partners. IT doesn't always happen, if you're talking with your partner, started partway into the last dance, or some such- but as a general rule, that's what happens. It's like the phenomenon in Israeli Dance of the short versus the long set. A short set gives more freedom to dance with new people, because there's no threat that you'll be stuck with them for dance after dance if they aren't very good, or are downright bad. A long set is lots of fun- if you have a partner, and if you like that partner. Otherwise it's either boring to be sitting around waiting for circles dances to start again, or misery- especially (from my point of view) if your partner: cant' lead, tends to grope, smells, thinks he's a lot better than he is... And it's that much more so at a swing dance, where the "short set" is shorter (one dance, maybe two), and the "long set" is entirely variable. One could say that what the swing club here needs are some efficient group behavior patterns. But how to set those up, and would people want them? I don't know.

WHy are there brown wax-paper like bags in our bathroom, behind the pipes? THis baffles me.

And while I'm asking weird questions- why does Professor Davidson remind me of an odd cross between Nathan's mother and Victoria? (General description of Professor Davidson: she's a very talkative, opinionated, irreverant, charismatic, and funny person. But I think the actual voice qualities and intonations and gestures are also similar, and those are harder to describe. I really don't know how. Possibly also some face shape, although more face usage: neither of the other women is tall and blond, certainly.) It's just strange.

And on the same topic- why do so many professors seem so charismatic? Mine really seem to. Or maybe I'm just susceptible to academic personalities?

ANy why is Liz asleep, and will she be asleep when I get back again at 9?
