Last night was the Boston ANnual Christmas (Israeli Dance) Marathon. True, it is usually a Christmas Eve marathon- a perfect use of the otherwise hard to use time, since most of the IFD population is Jewish (at least around here: I know the case is different in some other parts of the world). So we went up after Shabbat (Yes, having been home for not even 4 days, I went back to Boston for an overnight), thanks to parents who were patient and not desperate to be there for the children's dances and beginners' hour. We arrived around 8:40, and I was happily surprised to run into a friend from school who's been dancing with [livejournal.com profile] zodiacmg and I at the small session we run on campus. She stayed for a bit, and then I went to call the abovementioned partner in crime, realized I'd not brought his number with me, and shamelessly bothered another friend in order to get his number. Called, was asked to call back later. So I went and danced, and felt sort of spacy and unconnected, and the program just wasn't terribly thrilling. Later made my call, went back to dancing, slowly got into dance-mode. I found that I had more fun once people were being more personable since the crowd had shrunk considerably. So the last few hours were the best of the night, as far as the dance crowd and my interactions with it, although it was awfully pleasant to see all the little ones who are there at the beginning. It was nice to be there and feel like I fit in- like I was one of the locals. We left around 3:45 I think, since that's when our hosts left- we stayed over with a really nice couple whom I see regularly at dancing but don't usually talk to in much detail, and who'd offered us a place to stay after a previous marathon. Really an interesting set of people, they differ in so much: both Jewish, but he's Israeli/she's American, he's Sephardi/she's Ashkenazi, and he's significantly older than she is. But they seem quite happy, for all that. SLept there, had a nice talk over breakfast once we all demonstrated a happiness to talk about gardening and the ravages of squirrels and similar rodents. Came home as it was snowing there, and it slowly stopped as we got closer to home- but started snowing this evening.

I think one of my disconnects with the marathon was that this was the first time that there were few of my similarly-aged friends there. Nathan ([livejournal.com profile] yemeknight) was there and his sibs, but that was it for folks in my age range whom I knew. So once I adjusted it wasn't bad, but it took some adjusting- last year [livejournal.com profile] jessebeller and [livejournal.com profile] hannahlinn came up, along with Em and a couple other folks. Two years before (the intervening year, we were in Philadelphia instead with crowd of friends, etc), the Atkinsons were around- my goodness, it feels like ages ago, somehow (It's a whole story of its own).

In mostly unrelated news, my father has fallen prey to the itnerest in "what is this livejournal thing you talk about anyways" (not his words)- he's [livejournal.com profile] chaos1015 should he ever post (I hope).

Mom's latest book recommendation: Sexual Politics by Kate Millett. So my contact with influential books from the 60s and 70s continues... It certainly starts off dramatically.
