Purim has always been an odd holiday for me: many years I never quite get into the mood of it properly. This year was one of those years- I was impatient at the megillah reading last night, and the whole costume thing didn't work quite the way I wanted it to. I broke my fast and headed over to a Purim party, but got there a bit late.
Today, the megillah reading was better- I was at least captivated by some literary details and techniques that I'd not noticed before. But after that- the humor at the seudah was incomprehensible- usually the words themselves were difficult to understand, and when I could understand the words, I didn't get the humor. After a while, I ended up mixing mocking them with ignoring them. That at least was fine, except that the volume gave me a bit of a headache. After mincha, I came back to my room to nap, and slept pretty much the rest of the afternoon. So it was a very odd sort of holiday- rather more build up than actual enthusiasm for the event itself. And now I should be off to bed, so I don't lose all the benefits from that extra-long nap.
