We spent all morning (leaving from school at 7:00am, meaning that to make sure that I was there on time, I left home at 6:15, and we didn't daven as a minyan so I had to do so before I left home too- I was up far too early) seeing a Tali school- their tefillot (prayer), a lesson on Judaica, a tour and a discussion with some of their administration and teachers. It was fairly interesting, but not a great use of orientation time. It seemed like a rather odd use of that much of the day. There was also, later, a talk in English by the editor of some magazine type thing that no one had heard of, when she spoke rather bad English and had been told to talk in Hebrew. I had a bit of a run in with her and got a bit upset and left, and spent the time talking to my administrative person instead about a variety of the things that bother me about Israeli society, about Judaism and Israel, and the like. The day ended with dealing with sorting us out into different halakha l'maase (practical halakha) classes. I really hope I can find a good chevruta this year- two years on my own is plenty, thank you very much.
I went dancing here for the first time, with the company of
zodiacmg , which was nicely familiar. The session, however, was one of the weirdest that I've been to. The dances did not follow any conceivable order, either musically or in terms of style, difficulty, or commonness. The crowd was non-cohesive, and many of them were pretty lousy dancers. There was rather little energy. I was very glad to be there with friends- another friend of ours came later- otherwise it would have been dull as dirt. I got wildly flirted at by the teacher, which I found mildly flattering and mostly humorous- as I'd already been warned "not to let him hit on [me]". It was a weird night, and ended very early- mostly because there was one (the only one) couples' set, which went for over half an hour. It was fine for me, as I'd snabbed
zodiacmg in advance, and I've always enjoyed dancing with him. However it was really poor planning for the teacher, when he had a Very gender-unbalanced group.
