As for the roommate thing . . .
1. Worst case, at least microwave ovens are easy to kasher. (Boil water in it for at least ten minutes, then wipe the inside thoroughly. Pyrex measuring cups are our friends.)
2. Nobody can smoke in the dorms, and you're well within your rights to demand compliance.
3. I had a roommate who drank occasionally freshman year. Not a disaster, just awkward. Make sure that she agrees to accept full responsibility if someone finds it in the room.
4. Really, most people at Brandeis are reasonable and intelligent. Don't worry too much.
