Tales from Pesach Vacation

Last night, I impressed my father-in-law by showing him how to play minesweeper, and then doing so at my (admittedly rather rapid) rate. Good trick, right?

Gratitude 21

1. friends who not only come to a dinner to celebrate my senior sermon, they coordinate it, and treat me to it (really- wow folks, that was really sweet)
2. running into my trombone teacher from elementary, middle, and much of high school on the streets of New York
3. finishing a paper in time for class- having written it entirely the day of (it was only 3 pages, but still)
4. really enjoyable hazzanut, in class
5. surprise company while walking to work (a classmate)

(no subject)

I didn't write about my senior sermon, and I'll try and do that later (it's a thing that deserves marking, even if I don't know quite what to say), but- today, we had a session on piyyut and music, for the class I'm taking on piyyut. And somehow, for all that I didn't grow up on That much classical hazzanut, so much of it felt So familiar, and rather nostalgic. Certainly, I grew up in a shul with an organ, and that was nostalgic. And between the yiddish music and the old Israeli folk dance stuff, there was further connections, but still. It was a fascinating experience, both musically and emotionally. It needs further parsing, but I don't quite know where to begin to really get into it.

Headcovering, again

Just wanted to comment, to remind myself, on how much fun I'm having with scarves and headcoverings, of late. I'm finding my experimental self, and having a lot of fun with color combinations, shape combinations, and the like. There don't tend to be a lot of options shown online (I've looked), but I'm finding that small variations are just a lot of fun to do.

Somehow I never had this sort of fun doing my hair.

4. shabbos guests of the most delightful variety
5. laundry machines that are free when I am ready to do laundry

4. love and connection from my parents and my in-laws

Now, as long as I don't have to actually come up with a creative Purim costume, all should generally work out, I think.

Gratitude 17

1. I'm done with interviews for a little bit, at least- and the latest one (today) gave me some sense of when I'd be hearing, even. (On the other hand, I'm still waiting to hear, and I need to call the last place I sent an application, to find out what's going on there.)
2. I have an opportunity to read a chapter of Megillah after all. (This is also a disadvantage and a folly, since it involves fitting in the time to learn it into today, tomorrow, and Wednesday... But I like Esther trope, so here I go, it seems.)
3. sleep
4. doily patterns
5. friends who share news, plan visits, come to meals, and the like

Cookies

We hosted a l'hayim for friends this last Saturday night. For the occasion (although we asked people to bring things as well), we made a variety of cookies (possibly- err, probably, or almost certainly going a little bit overboard). As such, I grasped the opportunity to make some favorite cookies from my childhood- chocolate oatmeal cookies. Each one is edible nostalgia- and tasty too. I'm rather pleased that a number of them were left over after the party...

Especially since this is a week where cookies are needed- in other words, it's just madness, all around: a role-play session on Sunday (which is to be watched, written about and presented on THursday), an interview yesterday, a presentation in Talmud class and a short dvar tefillah in Liturgy today, regular classes tomorrow, and then that presentation on THursday. eep. Oh yes- and another interview next Monday...

3. leyning, especially when it goes right
4. my coloring book (so calming and restorative)

Gratitude 12

1. Supportive teachers (several noted I was dressed up, and came over and asked about my interview- it felt really good and supportive. I wish there were some way to connect first year students up to the "network" more quickly, so they don't feel totally isolated and "cold" in their first years at JTS. I felt it, and I've seen and heard from current newer students that they have the same experience.
2. The NYC public transit system
3. seeing my rabbi at school (to coordinate and bring up the question of who's leyning maftir- I'm leyning the parsha, but someone else will take maftir. How convenient, since I'm just a smidge behind where I really Wanted to be. I'll be fine- but I'll do a better job if I don't have the extra maftir too.)
4. Appreciation of my handiwork (I made a kippah for a classmate, gave it to her today, and she appreciated it. I should have taken a picture- it was a new "concept" for me, but I'm doing one with a similar design now, and I'll photograph that one. I'm thinking about actually using my ravelry account a little more, and since kippot are what I mostly make...)
5. the success of the fine old practice of "if it doesn't work, hit it", at least in the short-term.
