I just broke my fast, and it is, therefore, dark outside. I just looked out the window, saw that it was dark, and was totally confused. It feels like maybe 12:30pm. I guess my nap was too much like real sleep for once, and I feel like this should be a separate Sunday from this morning and early afternoon. Maybe if I go eat real food to go with the power bar-ish thing I broke my fast on, I'll think it's really late-dinner time, not late-lunch time? It's going to be a mob scene though. But really, I've been out of my room once today, and that was to walk out and sit in my grandma's car for 20 minutes, so maybe it's a good idea.

fasting on Rosh Hashanah? I wasn't aware there were any fast days between Tisha B'Av and Yom Kippur.

Tzom Gedaliah is a minor fast (dawn to dusk) usually the day after the second day of Rosh HaShanah. It commemorates the assasination of Gedaliah, the last Jewish governor under Roman rule- after his death the Romans took over completely. It was today because yesterday was Shabbat, and Yom Kippur is the only fast day that can coincide with Shabbat- the others all get moved. THere are 5 minor fasts- 17 of Tammuz, 10 of Tevet, (both related to teh destruction of the Temple, and things I usually fast for because I should, not because they mean much if anything to me), Taanit Esther (the day before Purim, since Esther fasted. It also coincides with Nicanor's Day, a no longer practiced holiday, celebrating something similar to Purim, although I forget the details), and the Fast of the Firstborn, (the day before Pesach, and only the eldest child/eldest boy, depending on your interpretation fasts. It's also a very recent and sort of ambivalent fast day: if someone finishes a major section of Jewish learning, say a tractate of mishnah or the like, and has a siyum, a party for finishing that book or the like, one can go to that, eat and break one's fast at that point. So a lot of shuls arrange for such an event, and for someone to finish some learning then, right after shacharit that day.) Sorry for the information overload there: figured I'd be as complete as possible in a brief-ish summary.
