Poetry Meme

Poetry Meme, lizarded from [livejournal.com profile] rymenheld. (Rules being, post a poem. I'm going with one of my favorites by someone else. I'm sure you could have other criteria.) This one is, as I said, a favorite. It's translated from Hebrew, I don't know by whom. I found it in an issue of Judaism journal/magazine/whatever it is, that I acquired for free from the Bryn Mawr Bookshop at home. I'd also like to post a poem by my poetry buddy, but I can't find the one I want without some searching, and I haven't asked his permission, so you folks will have to do without that one.

Another Oracle
T. Carmi

A crazy woman
Came over to me and said:
The fork is a woman,
The knife is a man.
Write a love poem.

I set the table as commanded.
I've never been short of crazies
And always follow their instructions.

The crazy woman
Turned her back to me and said:
The woman is a fork,
The man is a knife.
Love will write you.

Great choice - I love T. Carmi! So so much. They have a couple side-by-side (English & Hebrew) books of his in our library...they're wonderful. I think you should post some more Maya-poetry, though.

"...and I'll sing. First I'll sing. I'l wrap the words
in paper bags, like pomegranates.
And afterwards, perhaps we'll talk."

Why can't we read some of That in Hebrew 123?

I second that.
