Just from walking around campus on the colder days of this winter thus far:

Maybe New Englanders got a reputation for being short on words and unfriendly because it's both hard to have a conversation between muffling scarves on the mouth and muffling hats and sometimes scarves and ear-muffs on the ears, and because you can't see someone smiling at you when they have a scarf covering all of their faces but their eyes.

That was my rationalization of the day.

That's not an unfair rationalization. I think another part of it is just that a lot of us don't bother talking to strangers unless we have something to say. Probably so we can conserve calories to survive in the cold. :p
