Does A Straw Hat Count as a Sun Hat for a Camping Trip?
Suggested packing lists seem to speak a language of their own. A sun hat- does my straw hat count? Or do I need to get one of those horrors that look horrid on me and have much less effective brims- but which can be bent/folded? I'm presuming laundry bag can translate to "extra pillow-case". Do "sturdy walking/hiking shoes" translate to sneakers that held up through gym class for several years? Or do they mean regular shoes with reasonable support?

extra pillowcase can also translate to laundry bag. :-)
for hiking, shoes generally need good soles with plenty of tread for traction, at a minimum, which means sneakers. real hiking shoes/boots will also have a stiffer sole (better for your feet on rough ground), some amount of protection in the toe for when you stub your foot on a rock, possibly ankle support, and more tread than your average sneaker.
