Does A Straw Hat Count as a Sun Hat for a Camping Trip?

Suggested packing lists seem to speak a language of their own. A sun hat- does my straw hat count? Or do I need to get one of those horrors that look horrid on me and have much less effective brims- but which can be bent/folded? I'm presuming laundry bag can translate to "extra pillow-case". Do "sturdy walking/hiking shoes" translate to sneakers that held up through gym class for several years? Or do they mean regular shoes with reasonable support?

I think [livejournal.com profile] tirerim covered it well, but on the hat thing... if a "sun hat" is to protect from the sun, then a straw hat probably won't do the job terribly well (lots of holes and such that would let light and UV through). Just a thought.
