That was much easier than expected. I was worried about it, and feeling sort of guilty about that- because I think that Jury Duty is actually very important as a civic duty, and one I can stand behind with full confidence. Err, confidence isn't quite the right word. It's a patriotic behavior that I feel strongly is a very important thing. So I felt pretty bad for wanting to get out of it- but really, I needed to. I'm leaving town on Tuesday, and will only be back for about a day before I go back to school. And I really couldn't serve on a Jury in New Haven when I needed to be in Waltham, other people's similarly timed commutes (if there were some way I could drive) to the contrary. Missing school just isn't good. As it was, I went, listened to the shpiels (and was surprised at the general levity between the court officials- I guess that's what happens when you have to give the same shpiel every day- certianly one of the guys who talked to us, one of hte clerks of the court, seemed surprisingly like a used car salesman, both in dress and vocal style), watched the videos, sat around and read, wrote and listened to music until 11, when they sent us all home if we hadn't been selected for a voir dire. So it was all quite easy and well, I did what I was supposed to and it all worked out. It's nice not to have to have either wiggled out of something I see as my duty or to have had to mess up all my plans.
