Just from walking around campus on the colder days of this winter thus far:

Maybe New Englanders got a reputation for being short on words and unfriendly because it's both hard to have a conversation between muffling scarves on the mouth and muffling hats and sometimes scarves and ear-muffs on the ears, and because you can't see someone smiling at you when they have a scarf covering all of their faces but their eyes.

That was my rationalization of the day.

From my pleasure reading (THe Jew in the Lotus, Rodger Kamenetz, p.140)

"For example, the philosophy of Maimonides is extremely similar to Buddhist philosophy."

It really is everywhere. Maybe I was right, back in high school, that I really needed to play with Medieval Jewish texts, etc.
