The Ongoing Saga, and Assorted Nonsense

Well, my parents have agreed that getting a new computer seems to be the best plan. So I need to call the repair number and cancel that. And research into computers continues.

In the assorted nonsense department, my room is a half-packed disaster area, and it doesn't Look packed excpet for the scattered boxes, mostly because most of the stuff that's been packed usually resides in a drawer or some such. I've also done a reasonable amount of my mending- I'm getting close to caught up. And friends are coming over this afternoon, which I'm looking forward to, of course. (And plans have been made with [livejournal.com profile] doctor_nine for a visit while I'm home.)

After reading [livejournal.com profile] naomichana's post over at her blog, I've been thinking about what sorts of things set off people's awareness and what things don't. I've had people see me for over a year, always having a scarf or some such on, and not ever have realized that I purposely keep my head covered. And I'm not at all sure if that's good or bad: it depends on context, I suppose. I mean, one reason I tend towards scarves Is that I won't be getting questions all the time. At the same time, it's a sign of how much they don't set off people's radar that after a year, some people have never even noticed, really. It's all a matter of what one looks for, I suppose. Also rather like how people have occasionally asked if I would cover my hair when I get married, and if so, would I put a kippah on Over the scarf.

But it does raise the usual question of whether one does this as somethign between G-d and oneself and if other people notice, that's fine but not necessary, or if one does it also purposefully as a sign that should communicate to other people. And if the latter, does it need to communicate to everyone, or only other religious practitioners, or only other religious practitioners who follow your same philosophy of religious practice?

Jewish Geography

All this moving to NYC is making me think about Jewish Geography, especially since I know bunches of folks there coming in, and they seem to be meeting each other without me even needing to be involved. ([livejournal.com profile] calliope_epic seems to know [livejournal.com profile] seliginegypt [who conveniently has an LJ moniker without even using the thing], not to mention less new-to-me interpersonal connections.) Being at [livejournal.com profile] orawnzva and [livejournal.com profile] fiddledragon's housewarming/househappying certainly brought that stuff to mind as well. It's both a very comforting and rather disturbing thing, this way that one's world just keeps getting more and more interconnected.

And please, if in the midst of my transition of location we're spending time and I start introducing you to someone I know whom I thought you didn't know, but you do know them- bear with me, tell me how you know each other already, and I will do my very best not to repeat this whole shpiel.

On a related note, I had a very nice visit this afternoon with Steve and Steve, who are LJ-less, and the course of conversation brought them to tell me that I know or at least know-by-reputation-and-stories something that seems like about half the NewJew population. A strange thing, for a public school alumna. (On the other hand, I did have a Latin teacher who threw empty plastic bottles at blind-covered windows. Would this scare you? Would it s care you if I'd said tossed, instead of threw?)

I'm still deciding if I want to get up early tomorrow and try and get into no-man's-land before rush hour really hits, and have breakfast and such then, or if I want to just wait until rush hour calms down, and not get home until the very beginning of afternoon. Of course, unless you comment quite soon with such input, I won't see your comment before I leave. But I figured that since I'm rambling, I might as well ramble a little bit more.

Silly Me- Good News to Share

I neglected somehow either yesterday or today to share the good news I heard while at dancing Monday night. Roni, one of the two leaders of the session, had her baby, a girl, last Tuesdsay.
