Shabbos was nice- it was very good to have
zodiacmg here. I think the next few visits will involve me going there, so it was good for me to have him see my space and my general environment.
Slichot however were not so terribly wonderful. The shiur that preceded them would have been a fine introductory lecture mid-morning, but at 11pm, I was tired and not very engaged by it. And it really didn't have much information that I didn't already know- and I don't know so much about slichot besides the usual stuff. The actual service was also not so useful: it felt very secure, sure of itself, and in general calm and collected. The woman leading seemed to be performing more than davening at some points. Compared to either the egal service at Brandeis that's held the first night of slichot, or the BOO slichot (where I'm usually a little uncomfortable and a little lost), it really lacked emotional power. Next year, presuming that I'm around here, I think I would be best off going somewhere else for slichot, at least for the first night.
