So, I'm at camp. I arrived this afternoon, after spending the morning alternatingly packing and being anxious. But somehow I managed to pack reasonably enough- even if I maybe brought more shirts that I probably really needed to, and forgot my bathing suit. So far it's ok- very, very quiet thus far: there are less than 20 people here total, and only about 12 of us at dinner. Most of staff arrives Wednesday, which is when staff week really starts. Tomorrow we get a big delivery, spray paint new stuff and stuff the paint has worn off of (to code it for meat/dairy), and who knows what else. The most reassuring parts of today have been finding that the guy who was mashgiach the last several years will be here for the first two weeks, helping to train me and get me used to things, and that the guy who's in charge of ordering and arranging stuff in the kitchen seems nice. (Things in my head are likely to get even more confusing though- he shares a first name with both
mbarr and
zodiacmg, but well- neither are here, so hopefully context should keep things separate enough.)
So far, folks seem nice, but not very much my type: but then, these are just the folks who've been here doing pre-camp maintenance and stuff like that, so it isn't necessarily a real representative sample of everyone who'll be here. We'll see what people are like. But well, there's reasonable phone reception and wireless internet on one porch, so- even if most folks aren't quite my sort, I won't be so very cut off from some social contact. (Interestingly,
jakal88 is off working at boyscout camp, and has taken to giving me a call when he has phone reception or on his day off. It's a rather pleasant thing.)
