I was just thinking, due to assorted recent and somewhat-recent conversations, about the privacy inherent in pajamas. Now, mine are pretty well-covering. Not completely tznius (literally modest, in Hebrew, but with specific regulations according to Jewish law), but pretty close, and they certainly cover me more thoroughly than many things I wear during the day. Nevertheless, I dislike the idea of people seeing me for more htan a short time in them, unless they're someone I trust to see me actually asleep, and even then, if it can be avoided, it's more comfortable that way. Maybe it's just that they're related to sleep, and therefore since you're defenceless when asleep, you associate that with the clothes you wear to sleep in. I don't know- it's one idea.

I think it might be that pyjamas are inherently a somewhat intimate type of clothing. You normally only get seen in them by close family members, friends close enough to have sleepovers with, and significant others, which makes it weird if anyone else sees you in them. For me, when I was living in dorms, I felt perfectly comfortable wandering around the hall in my pyjamas (or, for that matter, a towel), but it still made me a bit uncomfortable if someone who I didn't know happened to be there and saw me in them.

Re:

That's the thing- I don't mind if someone sees me briefly in my pyjamas or in a towel even- if it's brief. But if they're going to be talking to me for more than a minute, I'll put on at least a bathrobe (and my bathrobe is a rather, err, full and shaped garment: a dressing gown might be a better description).
