Steve and I met to learn today rather than tomorrow, since tomorrow jakal88 is coming into town to visit for a long weekend. Our usual procedure is to alternate reading and translating sentences, and then when we get to the end of a paragraph, we check it against an English translation. Somehow we've gotten into the habit of him reading the translations. This week, as he opened the book, he looked like he was getting into storyteller mode, so I made a comment along the lines of "ooh, story-time"- and he ran with it, and read the translation of htat paragraph, and for the rest of the evening, with the terms employer and worker read as "employer-bear" and "worker-bear", and with payment or wages replaced with "honey". It was a riot.

Now I am curious which text you are learning. Is this talmud, or something later or what?

Something later- The Chofetz Chaim's Ahavat Chesed, or Ahavas Chesed, as said chevruta would say. (His choice of text- and I think a good choice: I'm familiar enough with the Chofetz Chaim's writing style that I feel relatively comfortable and therefore we can use the real text, an advantage since I'm too stubborn to learn in translation. I think translation would end up being necessary if we did Talmud- he's had less chance to do serious study than I have, even, and if we did Talmud, either we'd use a translation, or I'd be doing nearly All the work. And this is working on his Rabbinic Hebrew too...
