Today's agenda was to deal with Marvin, and to make a few calls in the quest for summer work. Well, I spent 2 hours on the phone with one guy in tech support, only to be left with "call back when you can get the screw out and remove the hard drive". So I did, and tried his extension- it said to wait for him to call back, 1/2 an hour to an hour. Ok- did that, no call. Eventually I called someone else, and they had me do some other things, and hte computer set up- but after dinner, it was giving me nasty messages again, so tomorrow it's time to phone tech support yet again.

In better news, Dad took me for my first driving lesson for the summer, and it went well- so much easier and less nerve wracking than last time I started to learn to drive. Tomorrow I call DMV to try to schedule a test for around the end of the summer. This really needs to get done. Someday I'm really going to need that skill, and it'd be kind of handy before that point, I'm sure. I love public transit, but it can take forever, and I can't bike when I have a long coat on in the winter, especially since I have a regular bike, not a ladies' one.

This is what warm pants and jackets are for. Cold-weather biking isn't easy, but it's definitely possible -- check out Icebike (http://users.rcn.com/icebike/). The biggest problem that I find is my hands -- I can't find gloves that will keep them warm, so my plan is to construct a pair of pogies, basically giant mittens that go over the handlebars.

I also have no current plans to learn to drive. Of course, if you don't mind it, it's still a useful thing to have; I just really detest driving.

I admire you. But I'm giving in to society and learning ot drive- I don't mind it- my issue last time I was learning was that it was scary- and that's just the speed, and presumably something that I'm in the process of getting over. And I get sick of having to set aside two or three times as much time to get places by weird public transit (because Brandeis is just too far from the city to actually be on the T, and because the bus at home only comes every half hour, and in unpleasant weather is really unpredictable) as I would need to drive.

Yeah, I've just accepted that there are inconveniences I'll have to accept as the penalty for having a carless lifestyle. For example, I'm moving next fall for the primary purpose of being in a location that's within a half hour of most of my friends by public transit, and more convenient to bike from, too.

23. Can't drive. First set of lessons apparently sank into the swamp. Second set of lessons burned down, then sank into the swamp. Now on Set Three. I sympathize.

*chuckles* Yeah- set one of mine ceased when I left for college (not counting set .5, which got as far as driving Very slowly down one back-road, getting nervous, and then getting caught up in college applications). Set two involved 2 more of my drivers' ed classes (I must be their longest running and most sporadic student) and a bunch of unfulfilled promises to take me out to practice, and this is set 3.
