From Professor Wright: How the number of the beast is the world wide web. (I don't remember his words, so I'll give it in some sort of formulaic form.)

The number of hte beast is 666 (unless you're Heinlein, but that's irrelevant for this post.)
The world wide web is written as "www".
IN Hebrew, "www" is "vav, vav, vav" (or with Yemenite (I think) pronunciation: "waw, waw, waw"- it's related to the Arabic "waw")
The gematriya (a method of deriving meaning from the numerical values of letters: aleph is 1, bet is 2, etc...) of "vav" is 6.
Therefore "vav, vav, vav" is 666.
Thus the web is the number of the beast, and I suppose, by extension the beast itself.

Once someone I know (the father of the kid I used to babysit for, a genuinely nice man) got an email telling him that because he was Jewish and each of his names (first, middle, and last) had six letters in them- he was the antichrist. Does that make this guy the world wide web???

Well the only problem with this is that "Vav Vav Vav" is not 666 its 18. 18 is Chia (life). Gamatria is not a base 10 place system like say Arabic numberals. You just add the values of all the letters.

Plus 666 is a xtian thing.

Dang, you beat me to saying that! I saw the post earlier and was going to comment, but got distracted, and came back to my friends page and saw it again, but you had since posted.

Besides, it would make more sense to me to use Greek for figuring out something based on Revelation, it being part of the New Testament.

Parts of the New Testament are written in Hebrew or Aramaic, I gather... But I've never read much of it (translate: almost any at all), so I don't know for sure. This is a rather embarassing hole in my knowledge base.

Well, yes, I know. And I'm sure Professor Wright knows as well. It was rather a joke... It wasn't supposed to be real in the slightest. Note the other objections folks have raised.

Hm... I've heard that Jews are supposed to consider the numeral 13 good luck, as well. Maybe it's supposed to be a paradox?

I know the person who got 666 in the Housing Lottery this year; it made a lot of sense, lol.

Maya- how did the bank treat ya? And why don't YOU run?

The bank was fine- the first ATM was semi-broken, so I cancelled the transaction and swapped.

I'm not running for that job because I dislike dealing with money too much- I tend to be a spendthrift a bit too much, perhaps as well, and because F-board meetings are on Monday nights, and I'm just not around then. I'm at dancing. (And are you ever going to come with? Next year I may be running a group on campus, which might make that easier...)

From: [identity profile] bobtheslinky.livejournal.com

Yes, it would make it easier. I was thinking about coming tonight, but thought of it too late. The end of the year is just too hard- assignments and tests are beginning to pile up and such.

Maybe if I work it into my sched at the beginning of next year? Does KoP have to go EVERY Monday night?

From: [identity profile] debka-notion.livejournal.com

Nope. ANd do schedule it in, but start thinking about saving perhaps Tuesday for Israeli dance on campus, led by my friend Matt and me...

Well, no need to worry about Monday night Finance meetings, since Daniel just stepped up for the job. I wonder how recently that happened?

It would be GREAT if you could do Israeli dancing! Even if you don't, if I get involved in travelling with you earlier in the year, it'll be easier to incorporate.
