So, considering that the cafeteria is on the first floor by the B stairs, why do people going there for breakfast from morning minyan all seem to go down the C stairs then walk back to the cafe, when they could just walk out the other side of the shul and go down the B stairs and not have to double back on themselves?

One up and one down? One girls and one boys?

Don't think so- people go up and down both, and neither are gender specific- they're just staircases...

For me, it's because my tallit and tefillin live in the closet by the farther stairs. So by the time I go back over there, it's just as easy to go downstairs then across, and less intrusive to those who may be davenning late int eh synagogue as I am heading to breakfast. Also, one gets to walk outside for a bit if one crosses over downstairs.
