In Which I Hate The Postal Service

In moving out of my dorm room, H and I packed up and mailed 3 boxes of my things- two to his address, and one, of books, to my parents' address. The former two boxes have arrived, safe and sound. The last box just arrived- totally empty. Or rather- it still contained two of my papers, and had been refilled with crumpled brown paper. I don't know what someone wanted with a couple volumes of poetry, several books pertaining to Jewish education (this year's free Behrman House books, from their annual visit to JTS), last summer's sermon notes, and my class notes and papers from the semester. But they now have them, and I don't.

I am pretty pissed off, since if the books and papers had just fallen out naturally, the box wouldn't be re-stuffed with paper, I presume.

So I've called the post office and filed a complaint/a case. They've promised me a call back within 2 business days. I don't know what that will do, but maybe it'll provide me with some idea of what happened, and whether or not it's safe to mail packages...

Oh, man. Once the USPS opened a package of mine and switched its contents with the package of some random stranger. I was excessively annoyed, the more so since they informed me a) they didn't know anything about it b) they couldn't tell me why it'd happened c) it wasn't their fault d) no-one was going to do anything about it. GRRRRRR.

Sounds familiar- the same thing happened to H this summer, returning from Israel- he ended up with a "My First Mass Book" and a very short jean skirt, among other things.

The weird thing was the stuffing with brown paper. If I got someone else's stuff, it would make more sense, I think.

I dearly hope so. At least, with class notes and papers, there may be some identifying information on them- there are returned papers there with my full name on them, if someone looks. No contact information, I don't think, but facebook is good for this sort of thing.

Otherwise- maybe, just maybe, the post office will do something for me? I don't think it's likely though. One of the course readers is easily re-creatable, all I really need (and think I have in the email somewhere) is a list of the texts. The other (Yiddish literature, mostly poetry) is harder- and was more expensive. Grr.

Not cool! It is incredibly ridiculous that someone would do something like that. :( I would try to keep an eye on sites that sell books secondhand (like Amazon marketplace, half.com, ebay, etc) and see if any of your books have turned up. It would be all from the same seller, so.
