Dad got me up at 6:45 or so this morning, I got myself ready, and at 7:30, I was off with Freda, Les and Michaela (one of Mom's best friends from college, her husband, and her 7 year old daughter) in Les' truck (an odd experience in and of itself) heading back to campus. Travelling with another family was interesting- hadn't really don't that before. Last summer I stayed with several other people's families, and I'll be doing so more in the future, I'm sure. But I hadn't travelled with another family before. Not so different- I'm just less involved in their conversations. But I've known Freda all my life, so- I don't know if that quite counts as entirely. BUt the dynamics were different- possibly just because I don't remember our family dynamics when I was 7, or all the usual reasons.
Freda and Les had an interesting conversation about standardized testing and private schools. Neither were a fan of standardized testing, especially as much as it's given (neither am I- they're always either boring or too hard, and they're Useless). Freda thought that the only way to get rid of it and be fair in the meantime was to make private and parochial schools administer them too, Les disagreed. I don't know, myself. I have an instinct to side with Freda because well, fair's fair- but the world just doesn't work that way. My main issue with administering said tests so often is that, especially with the way schools teach to the test, not only is the education suffering, btu the tests cease to measure anything useful. A measuring device is only useful if you use it accurately, and allowing schools to teach to the test is like putting your hand on a scale with your sample. And I truly dislike dishonesty.
